I had a 'nuclear bone scan' done on my ankle on Friday. You're given an injection, which makes your blood 'glow' on the pictures and so injuries can show up on them. The injection contains a gamma-ray product. The doctor told me, my half-life after the injection would be 6 hours. Lovely. Pete said, it added to my spark(l)ing personality.
Halbwertzeit

The first Generations of Aboriginal children were 'stolen' between the 1860s and 1970s. If you've seen the Rabbit Proof Fence you'd be familiar with the practice.
In 2006 it has been revealed that another Generation of Aboriginal children is being deprived of safety by white authorities. By law, all children in Australia have a right to be protected from sexual abuse. Moreover, government organisations like the one I'm working for have the DUTY to ensure this. It appears, that no one is protecting large numbers of aboriginal children all over the country, who are being abused by their elders. Why? For fear of being accused of repeating the old practice, which of course is now being harshly criticised, and out of a notion of false political correctness.
Why can't we stop this ignorant and blatant racism that results from 'trying to do the right thing' and being so damned over-poltically correct?
It's Child Protection Week this week. Thanks to Lyla Coorey, Marcia Ellen-Duncan and Pam Greer, who are are trying to make the authorities to do their job, it might actually mean something to some children.

Yay, we've found a new home! :) It's got room for guests, a tiny balcony, a nice kitchen, room for Subi and the boat and - best of all - it's ours! We're moving in tomorrow, can't wait. It's a bit further from the beach than the current one, but loads closer to the tennis courts. Feels like my foot's healing faster since that prospect came up... Job's going good, I was given my first case yesterday, so I must not have been too silly last week.
Umziehen

Well. I'm not very fast these days, on my two crutches. So, just arriving in Bankstown, my new workplace, after 90 minutes on buses and trains I was practically dragging my way through a shopping mall, approaching two charity guys in snail-like fashion, thinking 'they better not ask me for money'. One of them was with his back to me, and while I made it past him in lots of little steps, his colleague called out: "Watch it Rod, you're about to be mowed down!"
I laughed so hard, it nearly took me off my crutches. Bless the Aussies and their british humor.
maehen
Also.

Let the fun and games begin
Well, first of all, I finally met Pete's family last weekend (at least almost all of them) - and can personally confirm that his parents and mine would get on like a house on fire, that his siblings are all complete nutters and that he's got heaps of cute nieces and nephews. I was 'forced' to eat lots of crabs and other delicacies and to get served hand and foot and pried with wine and song and in the end I even had to go and watch delphines in the river!
On our return I had a letter from the hospital saying that my foot's broken after all the looking at the X-rays - but it's all good, I just have to hobble a bit longer than expected. Well, I've done that properly, haven't I?
Now I've been at work the fourth day, where everybody's carrying cups of coffee around for me and celebrate the new arrival from Europe.
Our friends from Frenchs Forest are going there today - 2 months in the UK, Denmark, Germany, France - the Aussies are coming!
We will be moving flats by the 13th September, so there's another MAILSTOP til then, we've started looking and are convinced to find a nice place that will last. This time. ;)

The third week
I knew it would get more hectic! :) This week began in hospital, as last week ended with me spraining my ankle when we were strapping our kajak to the roof racks of the van. X-rays showed no further damage apart from the tendons and the doctor (a scot!) suggested I'd be back on both legs in three days. It's a lot better today, but I'm glad I persuaded him to give me some crutches.
I need an australian driver's licence, otherwise they won't let me drive at work. I'm starting on Monday!
And tomorrow we're flying up to Pete's parents, for the weekend.
Oh, and we're back flat-hunting...

My second week as a brandnew australian employee is ending. What have I done so far? I've moved home - brandnew, very nice flat with spacious balcony and 10 mins walk to beach. I watched 'The Castle', 90s Aussie movie about a family who fight for their home next to the runway of Melbourne Airport before the High Courts and say very Aussie things all the time. I've been for a swim in the mornings - I'd say the water is about 12 degrees and very refreshing! I've done a bit of translating work for my agency. And I'm reading about the Australian legal system and 'The Law of the Land' by Henry Reynolds. All in all probably a good induction into the new aussie way of working - taking it easy and if it's a nice day - go to the beach! :)
Naa, I'm not kidding myself that much. It'll start to get more hectic soon, no doubt.
Was habe ich bisher so gemacht?

*zuruecklehn*
Gar nicht so schlecht, hier.
moving ahead
I've had my first official working day! Rocked up at the agency at 1pm, signed some forms, drunk a coffee, ate choccolate, discussed the 2 current job opportunities and received my home work of watching a couple of movies. *lean back*
Not so bad here, after all.

Townsville was great. 26 degrees, blue skies, empty beaches, no stingers, fast motorbikes and being close to one's friends is a good way to spend a holiday which seemed too short in the end. Pete is sure he could live up there again, to me it feels a bit exotic, too-good-to-be-home and strange, but it's definitely worth considering being closer to people we want to spend a lot of time with. Otherwise we'll forever argue about where to spend our holidays, or spend them seperately.
Anyway, back in Sydney now, which feels grey, cold and crowded in comparison. But the beaches are more to look at, with the surf coming in unbroken by the reef, and we've got a new home, an old and - hopefully soon - new job. We'll be moving in this week, if all goes to plan, and all the people storing our stuff in 3 different places will be happy! And there's so much more to explore here, the bushwalks, cycleways, the harbours - we've only scratched the surface with our kayak and bikes so far. It's going to be a busy and interesting and successful year.
Leben

Pete and me are just spending a week in the sun - Northern Queensland, especially Townsville provide you with blue skies and a constant 25 degrees all through winter and the sea is happily box-jellyfish-free in this season, there's no sharks, so all you gotta do for a good swim is dodge the crocs. Or use Pete's friends' pool behind the house. We've come here to visit their newborn daughter who turns 3 weeks today and lots of other old and new faces.
Last night we spent with two guitars and two beautiful (erm, one beautiful, one very ambitious) vocals, singing 'Streets of London' to the tune of 'Twist and Shout'. There must have been something in the red wine...
Oh, shake it up baby, now

I have just been approved for my visa. I can now take up employment with my sponsor, and, as long as I stay in this employment, remain in Australia until 25th July 2010. I am even allowed to leave the country as often as I may wish, or rather, as often as my employer lets me. :)
I will now go to wander the streets in sweet disbelief.
unglaublich!!!

I've tried very hard not to spoil, but read with caution anyway.
I have to say, after the years of built-up, it took me a little while to get back into the swing of things. But then... what a fine piece of cinematography! The music, expecially from the organ, is creating a great atmosphere. All in all it's a bit more sinister and probably gory than the first one, which is not such a bad thing.
At the beginning there is a bit much of redcoat-palavering and Bootstrap Bill (cool make up!) is getting a lot of exposition. Nicely fitted references to part one, there's a bit of a rum theme threaded through the whole movie. All your favourite pets return! And young Will even has a very funny line. Something about turtles...
Davy Jones is a great baddie, I couldn't believe it, when I read the credits - Bill Nighy? Awesome. Especially the squelching sound, when he breathes out.
The fighting scenes are taking costume drama to a new level!! Legolas surfing down a stairway looks pale in comparison. My favourite stunt of all times though, is delivered by Johnny Depp, imitating a cocktail stick. Pete was worried all in vain about the previews taking away the tension and showing all the best bits, they don't even scratch the surface, so watch away!
We find out the mystery behind Jack's compass. That, in fact, it is straight out of Hogwarts. ;)
It is very obvious that there needs to be a 3rd part (in fact, it is scheduled for next year). There are A LOT of loose ends to be tied. But - for all you early-leavers out there - if you're a bit puzzled by the sudden end and think "Bu- err... hang o-- wha-- happened to him? Why apples? Uh? What's his agenda? What does the oracle mean?" STAY til the proper end! At least you find out what happens to ONE of the protagonists!
Oh, and, if you like ships, take some tissues. You will probably cry. And not just because most of the movie is set on (or in sight of) land...
Piraten
All Eure Lieblingstiere sind wieder dabei!
Wieso Aepfel? Haeh?

Walking through the Botanical Gardens in Sydney today I wondered about the groups of seamen in navy blue uniforms walking around - thanks to our local paper the mystery was solved: Mexican Instruction Tall Ship Cuauhtemoc was in port today, as part of their Circumnavigation. That's a cool way to learn your craft, surely!
And obviously, on their break, the guys headed for the Gardens. Not much trees out at sea...
Shame though, if nobody had nicked our paper this morning, I would have found out about it in time to go on board for a free tour.

Thanks for sharing it with me! I have just this minute filled in, paid for and sent my visa application to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs in Sydney. They're saying it will take about 4 weeks to process it. There is light at the end of the tunnel!!!

"Zwei VIP-Karten fuer Endspiel guenstig abzugeben" ??
Jetzt also Portugal. *eg* Gibt's eigentlich was fuer den dritten Platz?
After the game is before the game
Swapping shirts, the german players were baffled by the italian badges suddenly starting to sing, spooky... "Lehmann e re nostro, Quaffle due volto attraverso, Lehmann e nostro re..."
I'm convinced Schneider would have got a goal, if only they'd let him. He looked so determined. But even that wouldn't have been enough.
I should take up Totti into my bird collection.
What did Angie have to type into her mobile, right after the game? "2 VIP tickets for Sunday going cheap" ??
So now for Portugal. *eg* Does the 3rd place come with any prize?

Who's getting the reprieval?
Speaking of which... J Rowling was stirring up the mystical fog around Book 7 a bit more in an interview last week. Originally she had killed off 2 characters, who will now live. Instead, somebody else will draw their last breath. My big question - WHY?
She first wrote this chapter in 1990, what lead to this complete change of mind? Did some characters develop into something different to what she had imagined? Is it to do with the films / actors? Is she going soft all of a sudden? Is the bigger fame to blame, and strategical considerations? Have there been changes in our society in the last 16 years (terrorism??), so she felt she needed to adapt the overall message of her work?
I sincerely hope, that we will find out afterwards, who the first victims were.

Thoughts on Winter
I know, I know, I've complained a lot lately about the lack of central heating in australian households. But as long as I can walk around without a jacket all day, enjoying an ice cream, winter is good!
So, tonight's the night, Germany against Argentina, and the striker with the good german name Miroslav has been so un-german cocky on telly yesterday. So far Klinsmann has shown his critics (the loudest ones from my english camp, who thought, the team were too inexperienced and would only move things in 2010, at the earliest...) - and the old thing about Germany playing uninteresting and stoic football would fit the Itlians more this time...
Another phenomena of Football WCs, people who haven't got a clue, think they're experts, suddenly! :)
In any case I will thoroughly enjoy the game, which is broadcasted tonight at half 12. And after the Cup I will miss seeing the Reichstag every night at 8pm. Maybe I should write to SBS to set up their studio there permanently.

Ok, after some fuffing about - here he is! I hope it was worth the wait...
(the photo of our garden at the bottom should be working now, too)
Thanks, Fire!
Kookaburra

Photo Problems
Hm, the link to the photos seems to only work if I opt for sharing of my yahoo-folder. I don't really wanna do that, so I'll have to think of something else. How inconvenient! Please have patience...
Now you should be able to see Mr Kookaburra!
And as I got so excited, uploading new photos, you can also admire a view of our garden, if you scroll to the bottom of the page... New birds shortly!
*off shooting with camera*
Voegel
Jetzt solltet Ihr Herrn Kookaburra sehen koennen!
Bald dann neue Voegel!
*mit Kamera jagen geht*

Now I've worked out how to upload photos again, I'm gonna start off doing a little bird-series... This is one of the australian icons - the Kookaburra. This particular one was quite tame and very photogenic, so we could get up close and personal. It was taken on our camp site at the Myall Lakes.
Neue Photos

Melbourne
After a real happenin' weekend we arrived back in Sydney yesterday. First we drove down memory lane, and stations of my first trip through Oz whipped past my inner windows - buying provisions in 'Wee Jasper', picking Blueberries in 'Tumbarumba' or hitching to the 'Ettamooga Pub'. Speaking of country towns, Wayne and Pete lately talked a lot to me about 'Woop Woop', since then I want to move there! Isn't that a fantastic name? But I'm having a suspicion that that's one of these touri stories. Like the drop bears. :(
Anyway, during our journey Pete and me felt a bit like on the 'Amazing Race'... first a roadside camp with ice on the car windows. On the inside! Then Subi, our Mitsubishi Camper nearly gave in and we just made it into the garage of a friend 80k's before Melbourne. Then we just made it to the last train into the city and - thanks to the personal pick up from Sue and Matt (our ex-landlords) we just made it to the party. On Sunday, as the mechanics were still shut, we visited Sarah, in whose London flat we had already spent some nice evenings, and at night we sat wrapped in our duvet on Federation Square to watch the footie - Monday Pete changed some belts in the car, after we had feared worse and we were back on the road!

Bin Montag wieder da.
Victoria
I'm going to Melbourne! Tomorrow we're off, to a birthday party and to see the odd brit or other... ;)
Back again on Monday.

National Park
Have I mentioned that our road leads directly into a national park? I've been on a longer walk today, after the rainfall in the last week the dried-up creek beds had filled, the air is full of birdsong and I kept my eyes peeled for Koalas. If you want to know more, have a look at the Garigal-link.
Our house mate found a spider in our garden, but didn't know, if it was venomous, but he didn't take prisoners! He's not very fond of spiders. (got a sizeable scar from one on Fraser Island on his arm).
I thought it looked pretty, black and round, with long, yellow-striped legs. Usually they don't do anything, unless you do it to them first.

:)
It's quite unbelievable, finally one has a world event in one's own country and still I have to watch sports on Telly at 2am!! Like in the good old days, when the worlds in figure skating were in Japan or Canada...
But the game yesterday against Costa Rica was obviously worth a waking night! Wasn't Frings excellent?
:)

We went to 'Myall Lakes' last weekend, about 2 hours north of Sydney, right by the sea, and what with lakes on our 'doorstep', pardon - Subi-door! :) - fierce waves of the south pacific and pouring rain, we got pretty wet!
I still haven't seen a single kangaroo after 9 days in the country, but the birdlife is still amazing me. There were 2 really tame Kookaburras on our campsite, loads of Australian Magpies, some blue-eyed honeyeaters or something, a pair of ducks from Queensland, whose eagerness to travel even puzzled the ranger, and a huge swarm of Pelikans, the local black-and-white variety. They look so cool in the air, just inches above the water.
Camping

I am here!
Landed in Sydney 4 days ago - after a very very long journey, 5 exciting hours in Japan and one jubilating hour in Brisbane (my sponsors got in touch!) - and it's absolutely fantastic. At the moment it's raining cats and dogs, I get up around 4 every day, it's quite cold, but it's everything I asked for! :)
Pete and I are getting on like in the olden times, we live 5 minutes from the next shopping centre (with library, internet and capoeira!!), 1 minute from the next national park, and about 15 minutes from my friends, where I stayed to years ago. We've got a pool, palm trees and colourful parrots in the garden, life is quite good as it is.

The final final day
Somehow I've got the feeling I've been saying good-byes for the last 2 months. :) Even more than once to some people, including a surprise meeting with Roz!
Well, today's the day, though, and still I've got 2 more days til I'm finally reunited with Pete. Before, of course I will see Japan...
In London yesterday I revisited a traditional english entity - if you're ever around Liverpool St Station, look up the S+M Cafe, I can really recommend it! ;)

Eltern, ich vermisse Euch jetzt schon!
Reichstag
Yesterday I finally made into the centre of German Democracy! As the Reichstag opens til late, the queues are shorter then and the view of Berlin from the roof garden, at sunset and with fantastic clouds, is especially beautiful, I went on my last evening in Germany. I noted how badly built up the Brandenburg Gate is now on the East side, you can hardly see it anymore! And I noted what a nice contrast the Tiergarten is!
What I would like to know is, how do these voting doors in the assembly hall in the Bundestag work - do they have electric counting mechanisms in the doors? And what if you change your mind once you're in? Do you have to go out and come in again? (It's just like changing your mind about a visa...)
Afterwards andalusian tapas at La Fil, and yummie Caipi and advent-poems recited by the bar keep.
And now it's time to go! :)
Parents, I'm already missing you!

If you're ever in Baden (in the Black Forest) you HAVE to go to the 'Palais Thermal' in Bad Wildbad, with roman baths, saunas, pools and some very comfy deck chairs. Just the right thing to wind down and refuel.

Hole in the ozone layer
Half of my family have now decided to visit me by Catamaran or Railway *g*, obviously all in line with ecological sustainable traveling. A healthy amount of 'Mettwurst' and shark bait are involved too, somehow... We will see who makes it.

Transit
I've successfully undone work, house and life in England and have arrived in Germany, to do my good-bye rounds. I'm not gonna make it to everybody in person, but I'm not going to be out of this world *g* - just on the other side!
For new address or phone number please get in touch via the web. Will keep you posted!

Last Minute Preparations
Booked my tourist visa yesterday. Had to answer the questions 'if I ever committed a war crime' and 'if I have been trained in explosives'. I hope they didn't have spies in my chemistry lessons...
It is quite surprising in how much detail you have to organise when you don't know when you'll be back. And I don't feel very organised. At least I've really organised work things. Anyway, I'm going tomorrow, so there's nothing for it. :)
Vorbereitungen in letzter Minute
Hab mein Touristenvisum gestern gebucht.

Rolling Hills
When I recently returned back to England from home it hit me again how beautiful it looks from the air. Just like Northern Island, on my second ever flight in 1994 - green, lush, treeless, carved into the landscape with generous, smooth sweeps. You want to touch it, but if you get close enough to do that it has already lost the original impression. I love flying.
Huegelwellen

Gloating don't pay
All day I've been antagonising my friend Alima via texts about how great the sunshine is 'down south'. Until it started hailing cats and dogs, like in Manchester. Oxford is beautiful in any weather though. So are the people. I'm very glad to see it one more time. It was a stone's through from this Internet Cafe, on Radcliffe Square, where I decided a bit more than 6 years ago to leave safety and the known behind for something more exciting and enticing and challenging.
And now this next step seems more urgent yet much more unsettling.
I thought I was bigger than I am, maybe. But my friends here have told me that I'm bigger than I was. That should be enough.

London
After ages back in the capital. As this might be my last visit (bar the 'touch and go' in May), I'd thunk that I'll revisit all my old playgrounds and be all nostalgic. But oh no! Even 9 years after my first trip to London there's new things to see, for example Portobello Road, finally (very chique and very expensive), the Tower (I liked 'Beauchamp Tower' best, and there is, like Maren said, a lot of stairs) or the Regent Canal.
We're staying ultraposh just opposite Kensington Gardens and there's Internet for free, 24 hours! :)
Also, I've just read 'Tunnelvision' from Keith Lowe, an absolute must for all Londoners, Ex-Londoners and those who wish to be!

Stockholm
10,000 years ago everything here was covered from the last ice age, a fact you can associate with somehow in view of the roads, frozen rainwater pipes and iced-in ships on the Maelaren, which I crossed on foot yesterday! The maelaren is a lake which connects Stockholm, built on 7 islands in it, with the sea.
But otherwise the sun's as strong as it should now it's 'summertime' and it makes walks around town very pleasant, for example through Skansen, the swedish museum village, and in the Gamla Stan and along the Kungstraedardsgatan, where you can refresh with a Pripps - outside!
I learnt something new, too, that 'wargs' musst derive from the swedish 'varg' for wolf - we saw them in Skansen as well - and that my nan 'Jette' is here called 'nanna heart'. :)
The baby I came to visit is very gorgeous, mama recently lost count - but he's about 10 weeks and thinks it's hilarious when somebody speaks English to him.

Back to Oz
I am going back to Oz in May, to be with my partner, and the first steps are done. Told the parents, notified work, booked the ticket.
In ten days now, I'm leaving our house - it really feels like 'our' house - 4 of which I shall be spending in Sweden with my friend and her new baby, which leaves 6 days to pack everything up. A bit of an emotional time, to say the least, but I'll be too rushed off my feet to notice!
For any of you mailers or phoners, as of 31st March my details will change, but it'll really take til June to give you any reliable new ones! :)
It's a great date this. 1st of April 2000 (April Fool's Day!) I was on a ferry to England, with my little red Kadett (which Juli helped packing), a survival pack from Claudia and the girls, parental advice resounding in my ears (together with the noise of the engine room) and a bellyful of guts. :)

St Range
I had a socialist Epiphany.
Lone parent applies for grant (as he hasn't been paid family allowance for months, he's a bit tight) and unfortunately I have to inform him that he's not getting anything. And, does he complain that there's not enough in the budget? That the rich are wasting too much and that's why it doesn't even last for the essentials? Nah. He kicks downwards. "It's cause the Asylum Seekers get everything..." Something's wrong with that logic. Somebody who's got less than you can't be responsible for your own struggle.

richtige Musik!
musical break
As I'm driving a lot these days, I've been listening to the radio a bit again. And was thoroughly thrown. After years of reasonably pleasant R&B, Dance, Hip Hop, Rap and Pop, Radio One played real music! When I recovered from the shock and found out who was behind it, it became apparent - the arctic monkeys should not be unheard of!

Visas...
Heiraten. Zumindest als heterosexuelles Paar.
"De Facto"
In Australia the so-called De Facto relationship (non-married couples) is a recognized ground for visa eligibility. You have to provide official documents - the more official the better - to prove that this has been going for at least 12 months. If you have the appropriate paperwork, your australian partner and their employer can confirm that you're able to support your spouse financially in the first 2 years (as you're not entitled to any benefits during this time), you don't fail your health checks and you pay the 1400 AUS $ fee, this visa is indeed obtained fast and easy.
How do you prove your relationship to be genuine and hasn't been made up for visa reasons? The government expects you in general to share home and accounts etc. If you can't show that, you have to have heaps of other evidence, for instance jointly owned goods, joint holidays, statutory declarations and the like.
In Great Britain the regulations are similar, only you have to prove your relationship has been going for at least 2 years.
And in Germany? There is only one way to prove, that you're serious. Marriage. If you're a heterosexual couple.

Visas... Germany
Germany
In Germany Immigration is regulated by the 'Foreign Office' - unlike in Britain. Probably to show where exactly the barriers are. The reason being, that Germany - unlike Australia and Britain - is not an Immigration country (any more). Hence the following clear words on the website of the 'Auswaertiges Amt' (translated):
"Because of the hold on recruitment agreed by the Federal Government in 1973 and in the light of rising unemployment a legal ruling (employment bill) limits the access to the national employment market for foreigners from third states. Generally, only certain professions can apply, after the employment administration has given their ok."

Visas... Australia
They've got their own department for Immigration. Who state on their website: "There are two programs designed to help people wanting to come to Australia permanently." There's the 'migration programme' and the 'humanitarian programme'. Each of them include lots of different visa options, depending on your background, links and skills. It sounds like, they're at least trying to make it look easy. ;)
Australien

Visas... Britain
Bitte, was auch immer Ihr tut, nehmt hier keine Einwanderungsratschlaege entgegen, denn: ich hab absolut keine Ahnung. Guckt lieber auf die einschlaegigen Webseiten!
Britain
So, what do you have to do to get a work permit here? Well, this is what the Home Office Website says:
"The UK Government wishes to manage legal migration in the interests of the UK economy, and there are opportunities for people with very different types and level of skill."
So far so good. Opportunities sounds good. 'in the interests of the UK economy' sounds like depending very much on the good grace of... somebody. But we'll see...
Grossbritannien
So weit so gut. Chancen klingt gut.

Visas
I noticed that a number of friends have been influenced (or, should I say, 'impaired'?) by visa regulations in different countries. Be that the wish for a holiday, the plan to start work after finishing your studies, or to travel through a third state. Now, I personally have never seen the benefit of visas - in my mind you give permission to come and live in your country for 6 months to everyone who can afford that and doesn't cause trouble, and if you don't find a job in that time, you go home, and if you do, you stay. But that's far too simplistic and obviously not how it works, so I've entered the list of visa-impaired people. Over the next couple of months I'm planning to shed some light (erm, 10 Watts, patchy) on the different visa regulations in Britain, Germany and Australia. And if you've got any stories, concerning visas for these or other countries, please share.
Wer braucht Visa?

New Year sms erhalten, datiert 1. Januar 2006, 0:20...
Wunderbar.

hello from Amsterdam!
For the hard working part-time backpacker even weekend trips are worth an entry! Unlike on my first Amsterdam trip the weather the weather is very agreeable, the journey less sickening (I guess I kept my neighbours in the KLM cityhopper awake with snoring and mumbled comments to my dreams), the accommodation excellent and the company more good-looking. :)
Unfortunately my dutch still leaves much to be desired, but at least I know how to pronounce Egelantiergracht and that I should keep the swearwords learnt of Toby to myself... The queue in front of the Anne Frank Huis is nearly as long as the one in front of the Reichstag every time I'm in Berlin, so that's again postponed til next time.
It's nice to have boats just underneath your living room window. Nearly a house-by-the-seaside substitute. A night in Amsterdam with two Aussies, one German and one American - all somehow nearly home but still so foreign, all transiting with more or less long-term plans and bigger or smaller visa issues...(

Hm. As I've not been busy traveling, there's been a bit of a blogstop. And so much has happened. Germany is lacking a Fuehrer, some parts of the world have been flooded, both Bono's debt-eraser campagne and the coming olympics in London have been upstaged by bomb attacks, Dumbledore became the most recent victim for Euthanasia, I moved to St Oke, a new string instrument moved in as well, I played the Grandma on my niece's school graduation, and Australia came to England.
Really thinking hard about keeping this up, as blogging is definitely made for daily ejaculation, or at least a regular one. But the next travel is nigh, I'm sure.

We sell tiles for your walls and tiles for your floors... Our boss is called Steve, and he's very nice, he sells loads of tiles at a very low price..."
Haach.
Tiles
I have definitely moved to the country. This morning, on the way to work, on the radio: "We sell tiles for your walls and tiles for your floors... Our boss is called Steve, and he's very nice, he sells tiles at a very low price..."
Bleeess. Why ever did I leave advertising?

:)
What a day for a daydream...
Ok, you all remember the first greeting between Aragorn and Haldir in Helm's Deep? I can be heard uttering that sentence a lot these days, emphasis, smiles and all.
:)

The days of the revolution are finally over
I've just been passed by two students on Wilmslow Road, who were carrying billboards. Not with Che Guevara, no "Stop student fees" nor an invitation for free beer in the Student's Union. No, they were running advertisements for a new student-estate agent.

Love
Yesterday, at the traffic lights
I'm standing on the road, still deep in thoughts after a longer sitting in the I-caf, waiting to cross it. Given that it was midnight, I was probably asking for it.
He: "Wwwhere you off to, luv? Goin' 'ome? Yyour plasse or mmine?"
Me: completely blank expression
He: "I love you!"
Me: "Well, that's alright then! Everybody's gotta love somebody. Sometimes."
Afterwards I wondered if it was positive or negative, that we weren't on the same alcohol-level. Would it have been funnier? Or harder to feel so bloody superior?
Dienstleister?
Banks
Bob Hope said once "banks are institutions that lend you money, if you can prove that you don't need it." Which means they have no use. I have to agree more and more. Banks are just an incredible absurdity. What do they call themselves? "Service" Industry? For crying out loud. Opening hours from 9.30 - 4pm, idiotic call centre staff, reluctant to give out branch phone numbers - that's only a few examples, that banks should rather call themselves "Selfish Industry". Yesterday, the latest farce. "What, you want to make a money transfer? To a DIFFERENT bank? Yes, but that costs 23 pounds in fees. Why don't you go to the other bank and pay it in in cash?"
Maybe because their opening times are 9.30 - 4pm, too? (maybe, also, because I actually thought it belonged to their duties) But you try and explain that to idiotic call centre staff. "no, it says here, it's open til 6pm." *sigh*
The "service" industry is going down the drain, mark my words.

Energieverschwendung ohne Atomstrom. Obrigheim abgeschaltet. 2 hin, 17 im Sinn.
Visa
You travel from general election country Great Britain (did Tony get the message??) to regional election county Nordrhein-Westfalen and all you hear or read (starting with the magazine 'Focus' on the plane) - apart from gossip from 'Marktl am Inn' - is the so-called Visa-affair around foreign minister Fischer. I liked the two well-clad but bored gentlemen on the regional train between Altenbeken and Paderborn who spoke right from my heart in their german-turkish accent (oh, how I've missed that) about how stupid visa regulations are and how they find that everyone who can fend for themselves and don't cause trouble should be allowed to live wherever they want to. One of them carried on with taking a cable binder out of his pocket and using it to explain how some men are monsters and how greed leads to war in Iraq. Which caused me completely different thoughts, after having read, at the breakfast table whilst looking after my godchild, about the woman who had to come face to face with the murderer of her two children.
Don't politicians think they are faced with enough other problems before getting all worked up about visa? Waste of energy. Without any involvement of nuclear energy. Obrigheim turned off. 2 down, 17 to go.

Isn't that a great word?? I think it's fabulous, vehicular. Saw it in town on a sign "vehicular access on other side of building". Sounds a bit like an eye condition.
But what I was going to write about is more "interphilar". Before I went travelling, it felt like I was leading "2 lives" already, with 2 seperate circles of friends, in 2 seperate geographical areas, with 2 seperate languages, cultures and history (well, not THAT seperate, actually). And now I've acquired, not surprisingly to myself, a third one. For me personally it's all very enriching. For everybody else involved it seems to be a bit disturbing at times to say the least.
More than one person has recently hinted, very subtly, that the one life involving them is, surely, more important than the other 2.
Now, I've already fallen in the same trap. By seperating them. It is not, actually, me leading 3 lives. It's one. All inclusive. It's a bit bitty, it includes a lot of people and places. I like it this way. And yes, YOU are important.
Vehikulaer

The Glory of England
Manchester photos are still waiting to be done, even though magnolias, daffodils and the like are coming across very photogenic, I haven't attacked them with my camera yet. The 'General Social Care Council' has declared social work a licenced profession as of 1st April, so I have been busying myself with the aquiring and translating of documents instead. Today's topic is the new link to the 'soapbox trust' website. Neal and Sarah are taking part in one of their projects (Kenya, Maasailand) in August and are fundraising like mad. I'm planning to lend them a hand with my didgeridoo - soon also in a city near YOU, so listen carefully... ;)

- ... the dj in your bar asks all the women, if they're wearing thongs and you think "Thongs, in mid-winter? I've never heard anything as preposterous..." before you click, when more then half the arms go up
- ... you try and talk your customers out of drinking Fosters, cause it's crap
- ... you say 'no worries, mate' to everyone, and can't possible remember, what on earth you said in those situations before

The last day
Hmm! ...
:D
The last day
Bangkok, the city without pedestrian ways, the city of screaming, screeching and laughing - I returned because of my camera, which had just been ballast in my backpack for the last 10 months. They repaired it. It took them 2 hours. Now I haven't got any holiday left, but loaaads of film. Hmm!
:D
A maori woman asked me this week:"So, you've been travelling for a whole year, what have you learnt?"
After rattling off my list of new practical skills (...fishing, making perfect pancakes in -every-pan-no-matter-how-rusty), I realised that the thing actually was, that the world is full of open, peaceful, eager-to-learn people. It doesn't matter where you go, with the right attitude you'll find open doors. This was reinforced straight away, as if not to forget... Have been taken anywhere I wanted to go in the last 4 days, have been cooked for, taken out for dinner, laden with presents, stories, trust and doughnuts.
Rich I return.

Good-bye, Melbourne
After the Melbourne 'summer' :) has already made thick socks and electric heaters necessary, I now think I'm equipped enough to make my journey back. Just rebooked my ticket again, for the final time! I'm going to Auckland on Tuesday, 22nd, for a fly-in visit, then embracing the chaos again in Bangkok - and hopefully returning the heap of aluminium-rubbish that's cluttered my backpack since Perth - and will be home, err back in Europe, next Sunday. That's 9 days! "Home", just to avoid utter confusion, meaning Manchester, in this instance. I'm touching down on Sunday morning (any offers on full english breakfasts and copious amounts of strong tea to keep my jet lag at bay are gracefully received). Now I'm gonna swing myself on the scooter again. Wroom, wroom!
In 9 Tagen! Brumm, brumm!

Lea just emailed me this delightful photo and I had to share it with you. Why she chose it, out of all the 100s we took between May and July, only she will know. But it was a great reminder of a delicious night at Coco's backpackers in Katherine. And the Northern Territory still features a lot these days, not just in Pete's taunts that I had to go to Darwin three times, but also in the taunts by the odd guy on the road who 'reminds' me that females are not supposed to play the didgeridoo. The one today fitted well into a line of people I've met whilst busking.
He suggested I go to the Northern Territory, where I 'would get my head kicked in' for such exploits as playing the didgeridoo as a woman. (doesn't he know it's called a 'yiggi yiggi' there and 'didgeridoo' is a word created by Charles Darwin??) Shame he didn't care to stop long enough to find out that it's the very NT, where Aboriginal law allows females to play, when only for musical pleasure, not of course for ceremonies. Shame I don't take advice from people who don't show any respect for me. I didn't know it then, after the lamb dinner in Katherine, that picking up the didge as my instrument would have a whole feminist aspect to it. I only found out about that after I left the NT. It wasn't planned, however I don't mind. And now everybody is telling me to go back there and find out? No way, Darwin for a fourth time? ;) Nah, that's not the real NT anyway. Alice, here I come! But not now. There's a time and a place for everything...

For the worriers amongst you - it's true that parts of Melbourne started to float away yesterday in the heaviest storm for a century (31 hours of continuous rain, welcome to the Australian summer... the Queenslanders from the tropics would have only pity for this kind of 'storm') and some residential areas are still without electricity, but the northern suburbs have been let off lightly and we only had the smallest puddle in the bedroom, due to an overflow in the chimney. So, all good here! Well, apart from the government warning not to swim in Port Phillip Bay this weekend, because of all the contaminated rubble that came down the Yarra River. Not fair, in the light of me looking forward to exactly that as my final activity. Might have to stay an extra weekend after all...
Drier greetings from Gina and Kai, who've made it to the South Island in New Zealand and who're still having a ball!
Wasser marsch
Also alles im Lot hier!

Vanessa, my old Manchester companion from Sydney, told me years ago that Melbourne is the 'most European city in Australia', so which better place was there to end my time in Australia, and in a way, prepare me for my return? I've arrived back here last Friday with Pete, who moved into a cute little flat in the northern suburbs. We had a great little party there on the weekend, with friends round the campfire in the garden, lots of home-made music and his landlords toys. Stars of the afternoon were definitely the unicycle, the indo board and the bike with the peculiar joint in the front forks that bucked everybody off who tried to ride it over rough ground. (Pete acquired a pretty gash under the knee-cap, teehee)
I realise that I've met heaps of great people here in the last 10 months and try to say my good-byes more or less personally. There's the family from Queensland, who's just chanced to holiday on Phillip Island, the dangerous truckie from Dubbo, who's planning a trip to Auckland or servas hosts with job opportunities. (Speaking of job opportunities, there's a demand for social welfare workers in Australia...) But I've just had a dream job on a blueberry farm in the snowy mountains. Yum! :)
Oh, and elsewhere I'm working on bringing my luggage back down to 20kg for the next flight. Does that mean there will be no souvenir-buying?? Anyone mind?
Maybe I'll donate some more instead towards Hana's Charity. They've got a new website with recent info from Sri Lanka, s. link list. See you all soon!
Mein letzter Stand in Melbourne
Linkliste.

Quakes, Fireworks and Thumbs
What a year of movement this is going to be. It started with fireworks over the Harbour Bridge, well parts anyway - we had secured a place with view of The Bridge, not bad looking at the absolute masses of people, which proved a strategically wrong decision for firework visibility; and my very interesting induction as a serious didge-street performer. Then, yesterday the climax so far of the australian tsunami-donation-fundraisers: a concert in front of the Opera, live-broadcast similar to the Red Nose Day Show (charity-cricket-tournament to come...). If you're still wondering if and how you should donate, how about this: One of my travel acquaintances, Hana from Japan, is flying out to Sri Lanka this week, to help her boyfriend drive emergency goods to the affected south of the island. Mark was luckily safe in the North when the desaster hit, but he's decided to stay and help, especially as they are looking for some of their friends. They are taking their van down there as you're reading this, full of medicines, food and clothing, will hand it out to people directly and head straight back to do it again, and again. How many runs they can do depends on how much money they can raise. Hana emailed me today, saying funds are running low. They are cooperating with Save the Children in Sri Lanka. This is the information I got from Hana:
"The accont they have set up for the purposes of donations is as follows
Bank - First Direct
Name - Esme Clark
sort code: 404777
ac no. 21108662
Any questions at all - and to be given email updates - please email: esmeclark@hotmail.com.
Anything you can spare would be really appreciated."
Apart from that the new year already brought me new revelations: The muscle group mostly used in dish washing is - tataa - the of the thumbs. Who would have thunk it? And, the dish dogs, pardon me Underwater-sink-technicians amongst you will agree with me on this one, the biggest hazard in the kitchen is this highly slippery potatoe-mash-gravy-mixture... And then, there's the countdown. In less than 3 months this trip is supposed to end. Three???
