Herzlichen Weltspartag!
Happy Halloween!
Just realised that I've now been here for more than 5 months!! Time flies... :O
The next visit at home is miles away, the next visit FROM home, too - February, so hail the internet, phone and mail!
Sydney is 'being good to me' and since I'm able to cycle again and the beach has moved into reach, almost every day feels like a holiday, at least with my rose-tinted glasses on. :)

Great Little Britain
The other day I attended a training event in a hospital. At the sign-in I was asked to put my name at the bottom of the list, underneath 'Vicky Pollard'. I looked up expecting gleeful faces, rubbing their hands at their great little joke. But no, nobody thought nothing of it, it's just another trainee, lovey. So I chuckled quietly to myself for the rest of the day.

Just like Hollywood
My office is a bit like the one on Ally McBeal. We've got a uni-sex toilet and the daily cappucino run. So you find yourself chatting to one of your male colleagues while on the bog and afterwards enjoying the sensual pleasures of creamy milk froth with the girls. It's all very good for staff morale, methinks.

Seit gestern dagegen so richtiges Montagswetter. ;)

Grey outside
Rainy, cloudy, windy and about 18 degrees Celcius. 2 days ago we had clear blue sky, 36 degrees and everybody moaning about the sudden heat, as summer isn't supposed to start for another 6 weeks. Since yesterday then real 'Monday' weahter. But from the pool, doing back-strokes, it looks very dramatic, especially when the surf billows over the edge. And the sun doesn't blind me. I think in 6 weeks I'll need tinted goggles. ;)

Northern Beaches from above
This is a photo of my new home! We went kayaking in this bit of the harbour yesterday, it was very choppy and very exciting! At the bottom of the picture you see a bit of Manly Harbour and the ferry terminal - we paddled all the way from there... on the left the Peninsula with Manly Cathedral (just off the photo, where Nicole and Keith got married)... we landed with our kayaks on the furthest little beach on that headland, called 'North Head'. The little headland on the right with the white waves is Dobroyd Point, where Pete flies his planes, and at the top, if you follow the harbour round to the right, that little white dot is the Opera House, next to Harbour Bridge JUST at the edge of the picture...
Pete took this on from our Boeing 707, coming back from Townsville, flying in from the North. Our new flat is about 1 mile from the bottom left corner of the photo.

useful facts
In my juice bottle lid I can find 'Liddle Facts' that are to enlighten my day. Yesterday's was great I thought: "Koalas and humans are the only animals with unique fingerprints!"
Very handy, if a Koala has stolen your handbag. If he's a known thief, you'll be able to track him down. And, as they're not very fast, you can probably snatch it back off him.

Nuetzliches Wissen

Unity
For the German National Day I have the following wish (ok ok, I already had Sausages with Potato Salad and a great evening with 99 Luftballons and guests from very close to home) - a german travel story, written by a foreigner / immigrant / second generationer, who shows me the republic through the eyes of a not-quite-detached admirer.
I'm just reading 'Notes from a Small Island', about my 'other' home and it's so wonderfully patriotic without being pathetic, you want to actually cry. There's got to be something like that about my country, surely.
So, out with the book reviews!

Vorsprung durch Technik
So after 5 other scans my doctor sent me to have an MRI done - magnetic resonance imaging. After 5 weeks of pain and not much progress - well, regress, rather, diagnostically speaking - he said "This is the bee's knees of imaging technology. It's expensive, but it's the ONLY one." You can imagine, I had quite high expectations. I took another half day off (praise the patience of my employer at this point) and made my way to the Royal Alfred Hospital, was strapped up with all sorts of heavy material - the technician grinned at me "when we're done with you, you'll think we're sending you to the moon" and pushed into this tube thing, got headphones pushed over my head, droning me with some ghastly radio station that was almost, but not quite, tuned in, and not loud enough to overpower the regular 'Clunk Clunk' of the machine, and was told not so much as to wiggle a toe during the whole process. What with my thoughts circling around my useless foot, medical bills and prolonged healing processes, they weren't the most pleasant 50 minutes I ever spent.
But throughout I felt weirdly reassured by the huge letters in front of the machine, just at the periphery of my vision: PHILIPS. There you go, I always thought it was a german company. But it's dutch - live, break your ankle and learn.
Anyway, the pictures look amazing. They remind me a bit of Gunter von Hagen's body world sculputures, but I distinctly do not remember dying and being inserted with plastic and cut up. So this technology, I fear I have to agree with this quack, is the ONE.
They found out, once and for all, that I've got a little piece of bone ripped off, one ligament torn and two others half-torn. I also got a spur in one of them, to boot. Now, with this spanking new diagnosis in my pocket I have started physio and in the last 4 days the foot has improved 250%. Hail!
If you want - I could try and upload one of the pickies... ;)

Nachbar's Wertarbeit
